Autism is not a problem to be managed. And yet, medicine and policy continue to treat it as one. Voices are silenced, realities dismissed, and therapies erased if they don’t fit a narrow ‘evidence-based’ box. Meanwhile, autistic minds are mapping dimensions of consciousness that science is only beginning to measure. Autism is expanding beyond the confines of existing medical definitions and the question is: will the old guard change, will they catch up, or will they be left behind?

I was angry and dismayed by an article by The Guardian recently on autistic families, and spelling boards. It was a derisive piece that dismissed the reality of many autistic families, condemning the podcast ‘The Telepathy Tapes’ and the use of S2C spelling boards. It was a backward step for the autism movement. It was paternalism disguised as care - and it was way off the mark.
